Tips for Staying Healthy in 2020

Updated: Jul 14, 2020

It would be the understatement of the century to say that 2020 has been a rough year thus far. Between bushfires, a recession, and a pandemic, it is hard to believe we're only in the seventh month of the year. Right now not only is COVID-19 surging again in Victoria, seasonal influenza is rearing its ugly head across the country as well. Staying healthy is vital to Aussies right now, which is why the Ava Safe team has put together a few handy tips for staying healthy throughout the rest of the year.

Exercise Regularly

Most experts recommend at least half an hour of exercise each day for adults to promote wellbeing, as well as possible weight loss. Exercise releases endorphins which help us feel good, so our anxiety lessens when up our energy output! Less anxiety, more energy = good for the immune system and we want our immune systems firing on all cylinders during flu season. If you aren't already getting at least 30 solid minutes of exercise each day, try walking for an extra 5 minutes each day until you feel comfortable enough to expand your routine. If you have any existing health problems or want assistance with weight loss, consult your doctor.

Eat Fresh, Healthy Foods

Say goodbye to pre-packaged snacks this flu season and try reaching for fresh fruit and veg as a snack instead. Processed foods often have excessive levels of salt, trans fats, preservatives, and sugar -- none of which are good for promoting a healthy body. Fresh fruit and vegetables, on the other hand, offer varying levels of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals that will give your immune system extra support as well as energy to help you with your new exercise routine.

Wash Your Hands Regularly

It is very easy to go back to the way things were before COVID-19, with people only washing their hands after using the bathroom and similar activities. But regular hand-washing with soap and warm water is vital to keeping all kinds of germs, bacteria, and viruses at bay. If you're on the move use alcohol-based hand sanitiser to kill germs on the move and ensure you're minimising the chance of coming into contact with a contagious infection.

Keep Your Home and Work Environments Clean

During winter, in particular, it is easy to put cleaning in the too-hard basket, what with fewer daylight hours at the end of the workday and chilly weather. However, it is important to ensure your everyday environment doesn't become a haven for germs. That's why we recommend you regularly de-clutter, dust, and wipe down surfaces with the appropriate tools. It means you won't get nasty buildup between deep cleaning sessions and any disinfection or fogging that takes place can really do its job.

Above all, try to be mindful of of any government suggestions or warnings and try to maintain a high level of hygiene and self-care even during these difficult winter months.
